Emerald Lakes

Turn off U.S. Highway 98 in east Destin, clear the manned gate, and the pace changes almost at once. Emerald Lakes is a quiet, gated neighborhood of single-family homes threaded by seven small freshwater lakes, its streets winding and looping so that most houses sit tucked into their own enclaves at the ends of private cul-de-sacs. There is little through-traffic and no reason to hurry: the lakes are landscaped and stocked, a couple set with fountains, and the roads bend past them rather than around a grid. It reads as a family neighborhood first and a location second, even though the location is unusually good - set between two golf courses, minutes from the Gulf, and roughly midway between Destin's harbor and the shops of Miramar Beach.

Emerald Lakes occupies a pocket of east Destin bounded by Highway 98, in the corridor that runs between the town's commercial core and the Miramar Beach line. It is flanked by golf on both sides: the Emerald Bay Golf Club lies to the east and the Regatta Bay Golf Club to the west, so the neighborhood sits in a green, low-density band well back from the beach highway's bustle. Daily life in Emerald Lakes centers on a shared amenity core reached easily by the bike trails that run through the whole neighborhood. There is a large community swimming pool with a sun deck framed by palms, double tennis courts lighted for play into the summer evenings, and a basketball court. The community park adds a picnic pavilion and swing sets for younger residents, and the stocked lakes invite casual fishing - along with kayaking and canoeing - as an everyday pastime. Behind the 24-hour gate, the overall rhythm is calm and residential: recreation close at hand, traffic kept low, and the water always nearby.

The neighborhood's position just off U.S. 98 makes the rest of the Emerald Coast quick to reach. The Gulf beaches are minutes to the south, and Destin's harbor - with the shops, dining, and boardwalk of HarborWalk Village - lies a short drive west, as does the open-air shopping at Destin Commons. Head the other direction and the restaurants and retail of Miramar Beach are equally close. That central placement, tucked between Emerald Bay and Regatta Bay and within easy reach of both towns, is much of the appeal: a quiet interior neighborhood that still sits at the middle of things.

Emerald Lakes suits families and year-round residents who want a secure, quiet, amenity-rich single-family neighborhood close to both the beaches and golf, without the pace of the shoreline. The gated entry and low-traffic, cul-de-sac plan appeal to those raising children or wanting a settled place to live full-time, while the lakes, pool, courts, and central location make it an easy fit for second-home owners and golf-minded buyers drawn to the two courses at its doorstep. It is, in the end, a calm residential middle ground - beach and harbor a few minutes away, and a landscaped, water-laced neighborhood to come home to.
